What the alerts mean
- Tornado warning
- A tornado is happening or about to happen. Take shelter now.
- Tornado watch
- Conditions are right for thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes. Know where you would shelter and keep checking.
- Severe thunderstorm warning
- A severe thunderstorm is happening or about to happen, with risks such as large hail, damaging winds or heavy rain.
- Severe thunderstorm watch
- Conditions are right for severe thunderstorms to develop.
Environment and Climate Change Canada issues these alerts for forecast regions, which is why an outline on the map follows region borders rather than the storm itself.
What to do
During a tornado warning
- Go to a basement or a small interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows.
- Cover your head and neck with your arms, a mattress or a helmet.
- In a mobile home or a car? Get to the nearest sturdy building now.
During a tornado watch
- Tornadoes are possible. Decide now where you would shelter and keep your phone charged.
- Keep shoes, a flashlight and a helmet or pillows near your shelter spot.
- Watch for a Tornado Warning and act on it straight away.

Why there is no Canadian tornado history here
Environment Canada publishes live alerts but no archive of past ones, and the site's tornado history comes from NOAA, which covers the United States. So for Canada, TornadoScanner shows what is happening now. For the US record, start at tornado history by state.
